DOO BOP RULES

I HAVE made an exciting new discovery although I feel a bit like Captain Cook. Because what I discovered was already there, if you get my point.

I’m referring to Brisbane’s Doo Bop Jazz Bar in Edward Street, the city. Have you been yet? I hadn’t until last weekend although I had heard good things.

Now I’m sold. What a cool joint it is. And you know you’re at a jazz bar when you see people in there wearing sunglasses at night.

We were invited to dinner and a show to hear Tyrone Noonan (ex-George) and his band Palimpsest do their show One For My Baby – Celebrating Sinatra. It was fantastic and for a minute there I imagined I was at the Sands in Vegas listening to ol’ blue eyes himself. Noonan is brilliant and relaxed and the intimacy of the club is nice. Great to be so close to the musos who are all terrific

One of the songs was special. I’m referring to the Cole Porter standard Begin The Beguine. Noonan’s dad, Brian, explained to me on the night that three generations had sung that number – Ty’s grandfather, Brian and now Tyrone. Nice.

This Sinatra show comes around now and then so catch it next time it does. This weekend you’re in for a treat at the Doo Bop with the Sharny Russell Trio doing A Tribute to Blossom Dearie. I love Blossom Dearie. I can’t go sadly but you can. It should be fun and there’s plenty more good stuff ahead. Top people play here, acts like James Morrison and Vince Jones. In September Ingrid James and Louise Denson will launch their CD Wild Silk Strings Project and that should be a great launch. Ingrid’s one of the semi-regulars at the club and what a voice she has.

The Doo-Bop Jazz Bar was opened in 2017 by Brisbane lawyer and entrepreneur James Stevens and features a piano bar and downstairs jazz bar where you can have dinner and watch the show in real supper club style. The Late Night Groove Sessions featuring live jamming are becoming popular. It’s housed in an old 1910 warehouse building near Metro Arts and its is breathing new life into this part of the city.

We had a blast and next time I go look out, I’m wearing my sunglasses … at night.
