Event Details

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Matt Baker (NYC) will be returning to Brisbane in January to perform and present one workshop at Doo-Bop.

*Highly recommended for vocalists, rhythm section players, and anyone wanting to advance their arranging skills!

“Learn Matt’s exclusive methodology for giving a standard new life with a fresh, contemporary arrangement”

Content:

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Each participant will be given two songs in advance to familiarise themselves with, which will be used in the workshop.
  • Matt will breakdown his process from the very beginning to the finished product, for taking a song out of its mould and into something new.
  • While preserving the melody and lyrics, learn how to create a whole new bed of harmony and rhythm for a song.
  • Numerous techniques to approaching a song differently and giving it new life.
  • Areas covered will include intros, endings, interludes, verse, and most importantly – the head, melody and lyrics.
  • Learn as we go how to score this for the band. (But each participant will be given a copy of the final score, so no need to write furiously in class).

About Matt Baker

Australian born Jazz Pianist Matt Baker leads a powerful trio in New York City where he has called home since 2010, performs regularly as a sideman at jazz venues including Birdland and The Blue Note, and in 2017 released his latest DVD album “Live at Birdland”.

His sideman credits include engagements with guitar icon Bucky Pizzarelli, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm and vocalists Ann Hampton Callaway, Veronica Swift (2015 Monk competition winner), Tierney Sutton, Arianna Neikrug (2015 Sarah Vaughan competition winner) and Judy Collins.

Matt Baker was an award winner himself in the 2003 Montreux International Solo Jazz Piano competition and a semi-finalist in 2004 and 2005. A student of Taylor Eigsti’s since moving to New York, Matt watched Oscar Peterson perform live an entire week at the Blue Note, from which a friendship between the two formed in the remaining years of Peterson’s life. Baker has also studied with Mulgrew Miller, Benny Green, Jacky Terrasson, and Ella Fitzgerald’s life-long accompanist Paul Smith.
