His enduring contribution to music in Australia was recognized with an award of an Order of Australia [OAM] in 2002.
An abiding love for hot music and for obscure and often forgotten melodies of the past and details of jazz history provide a vast repertoire. He is a strong passionate lead player who aims to keep the fire and energy in the music at every performance. He and Geoff Bull are very old friends and his respect for Geoff and the Finer Cuts will ensure that all performances are memorable and swinging in the great tradition.
The Finer Cuts five of the country’s most in demand young Jazz musicians: Justin Fermino, Ben Panucci and Sam Dobson (three quarters of The Cope Street Parade), piano prodigy Harry Sutherland and trombone extraordinaire John Hibbard. This band is unprecedented in Australia for it’s dedication to the tradition of New Orleans Jazz and is a true living and breathing symbol of the passing on of knowledge from an old master to the next generation. This band represents not only the history of Jazz but also its future.
The band has built a strong following in Sydney with their 6 year strong residency at The East Sydney Hotel, which each week is packed to the rafters with fans new and old. With three albums to date and appearances at some of the country’s most respected festivals such as the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, The Finer Cuts are by far one of the most unique and important Jazz bands in Australia today.
