Meretrio was founded in 2004 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with one goal: the exploration of the diversity of popular music. Since its founding, the trio has continuously expanded its creative work: Brazilian rhythms fuse with elements of jazz and chamber music.
In 2016, Meretrio released its sixth CD “Óbvio” in Austria and received a four-star review from Downbeat Magazin. The trio has played at major festivals in Brazil and Europe, including: Bavarian Jazz Weekend, Fête de la Musique, Jazz’n More, Mikulassky Jazz Festival, SESC Sao Paulo, Jazz Na Fábrica, and famous clubs such as Porgy & Bess in Vienna and Bremen Sendesaal.
In 2019 the Meretrio starts a new project and explores the possibilities of mixing loop-machine with the acoustic trio. The key question is whether it is possible to superimpose the sound of trombone and guitar using electronic devices to achieve a tonal richness that exceeds the usual possibilities of the jazz trio (guitar, bass and drums). The motivation behind this experiment is to compose a new kind of music that sets itself apart from the familiar sound of Meretrios. Using a loop-machine and digital effects, melodies and harmonies can be combined in real time. The result is completely new textures and musical sounds.
“Emiliano has created an exceptional collection of original compositions. Beautifully performed and produced, both ensembles bring to life the work of a passionate young composer who is developing a unique and expressive voice. His influences come from many sources within the jazz tradition as well as a wider sphere of contemporary music; Emiliano clearly has the mastery of craft and respect for these traditions to be able to absorb these elements to create something that is his own”
Dr. David Lisik (Professor at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand) 2018
“Mr. Sampaios´s originality is undoubtably putting a huge smile on the faces of Gil Evans, Moacir Santos and Rachmaninoff. Simply put: musical poetry in motion” Luis Bonilla (Professor at the Manhattan School of Music NY) 2016
