Event Details

The UQ BIG BAND is off to the USA in April and will play their Farewell Performance at Doo-Bop on Friday 3 April.

The 23-piece band is playing a series of gigs in New Orleans, Chicago and New York, and also have some amazing guest artists that will be joining them – Delfaeyo Marsalis (New Orleans), Gordon Towell (New Orleans) Ted Nash (New York), Chris Potter (New York), Ben Wendel (New York) and Bob Lark (Chicago).    The band is performing at some amazing venues including the Shapeshifter Lab (Brooklyn), The Jazz Loft (New York), The New Orleans Jazz Museum, the New Orleans Jazz Market and The Jazz Showcase (Chicago), and also collaborating with Loyola University, the University of Illinois, the University of Long Island and DePaul University.

The UQ BIG BAND is based at the University of Queensland in Australia, and consists of students and alumni who major in a range of academic fields but who all share a passion for jazz and contemporary art music.  The UQBB has become one of the most innovative and aspiring large jazz ensembles in Australia, having premiered many new programs in recent years.

Late last year, the UQBB presented Alice In Wonderland, a new program that pushed the limits of how a modern big band can sound, incorporating beats and samples, and hard-edged jazz-funk styles to recreate a modern funk-tinged re-telling of Alice’s journey down the rabbit hole.

The UQ BIG BAND was established in 2007 and is directed by Churchill Fellowship recipient, Clint Allen.
