Tue28Nov7:30 pmTicketedQld Conservatorium Jazz Presents: AUS/NZ Quintet

Event Details

Jazz studies with the Bachelor of Music degree at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University began in the early 1990s and since that time has evolved to boat two exceptional big bands, two vocal ensembles, and at least a dozen smaller jazz ensembles that serve as a training ground for young artists exploring their improvisational and/or compositional voice.

Hal Chandler

Influenced by greats such as Jaco and Felix Pastorius, Mike Stern and Bill Frisell, Hal Chandler aims at maximising the potential of the electric bass as both a rhythmic and melodic device. Throughout high school Hal was a keen student of the electric bass and gained experience playing in a mixture of rock and big bands, and playing in a small group such as the Aus/Nz ensemble allowed him to find to find an outlet for personalised musical expression. Hal is currently completing his first year of studies at the Conservatorium, and is looking forward to sharing his creativity with the Brisbane jazz scene.

Ryan Hammermeister

Ryan Hammermeister is a Brisbane Drummer influenced by Jazz innovators Tony Williams, Mark Giuliana and Roy Haynes. At age 10, Ryan was driven towards percussion/drum-kit in a music program at St. Laurence’s College, and further pursued private tutoring with his local inspirations Steve Pope, Joe Marchisella, Lachlan Hawkins and currently Paul Hudson. Completing his first-year as a jazz student at the Conservatorium, Ryan has discovered and broadened his own personalised vocabulary and musical perspective with the ANZ ensemble and other educators.

Amy Thompson

Amy Thompson is a Guitarist, completing her first year of Bachelor of Music at the Conservatorium (GU). At age 7, Amy began learning classical and flamenco Guitar, driven by her inspirations: Paco De Lucia, Andrew Viviers, Gerard Mapstone and Karin Schaupp. However, Amy has always been captivated with the Jazz world and recently decided to transfer from the Classical program to Jazz. Being part of the ANZ ensemble has helped her to further understand the Jazz language and smooth out the transition between the two styles.

Paul Ugarte

Paul Ugarte is a Jazz trumpeter currently studying at the Griffith University Conservatorium. With his Latin American roots, Paul was influenced by a range of musical styles, all which remain rooted in his sound. With the ANZ ensemble, Paul has broadened out his trumpeting vocabulary and his musical aspirations to new heights.

Doors open at 6.30pm. Show starts at 7.30pm.
