After 2 packed out shows in December with his Thelonious Monk Octet which also featured in Sydney and Melbourne, “One of Australia’s finest saxophonists”- Nik Fotakis (Jazz Australia), Michael Griffin is returning to Doo- Bop. This time with his own music performed by a sextet. Inspired by his time in New York, it’s all about good hard swinging jazz for Michael. And with a love for the great American songbook, expect to hear covers of some of the finest classic standards from Gershwin, Berlin, Kern and others, as well as his own compositions from his ABC album ‘Unexpected Greeting”.
A four time finalist for the James Morrison Scholarship (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) and a semifinalist at the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition in Washington D.C, Michael was also nominated for 2016 Young Australian Artist of the Year. He has performed in New York. This is one special evening of outstanding music and entertainment you won’t want to miss.
“Brilliantly accomplished local alto saxophonist Michael Griffin, whose style is clearly influenced by that of Charlie Parker, has not only shown an affinity with Monk in solo flight when he plays a Monk tune but …assembled and brought along an ensemble – an octet in fact – that not only allowed the Monk feeling to influence their solos but managed to achieve the dynamic, rhythmic and melodic effects of a Monk ensemble and its sometimes spiky, sometimes purely swinging, sometimes humorous effects of a Monk band”. – John Clare, Review of the Monk Tribute show @ Foundry616
