Event Details

Palimpsest: The jazz project from singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Tyrone Noonan, former frontman of No 1-charting, ARIA award-winning, multi platinum-selling Australian band george…

The band’s music has been featured on UK label Freestyle Records (Messin Around Volume 5) and many influential radio programs and club playlists throughout the UK, Europe and Australia, including Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio show, Russ Dewbury’s Nu Jazz Spectrum, his popular Brighton Jazz Rooms events (and compilation CD), The Jazz Cafe In Camden and Karsten Johns’ Vinyl Vibes radio program and club in Koln, Germany.

While residing in New York (2009-2012), Tyrone steeped himself in jazz including regular performances at jazz/cabaret venue Duane Park and at the Society of Illustrators’ Jazz & Sketch nights and saw some seminal gigs including both Sonny Rollins and Mark Murphy’s 80th birthday concerts, Jon Hendricks at the Lincoln Jazz Centre, Mulgrew Miller at the Blue Note and was a regular at the legendary Monday night big band session at the Village Vanguard.

After a hugely successful Frank Sinatra tribute at Doo Bop in 2017, Tyrone returns to celebrate Ol’ Blue Eyes once again in “One For My Baby – Celebrating Sinatra”.

“Jamie Cullum interprets jazz standards and a Radiohead tune (with serious marketing budget) and sells millions. Tyrone Noonan from george does down a similarly eclectic path, makes a better record, plays some great shows around the country and has to fight to register on the mainstream radar. Australia, you sometimes want to shout, have a look under your nose!” Noel Mengle, Album of the Week review, The Courier-Mail

“Palimpsest is a cohesive and lyrical album of seriously smooth and sexy sounds – a fusion of originals, jazz standards, Brazilian samba rhythm and intelligently reworked Bowie, McCartney and Vince Jones classics. …It is a glowing tribute to the quality of his own composing skills that Noonan’s ethereal ballad “Beauty Of All Things” by no means pales in comparison to the established pieces.” Megan Yarrow, Time Off Magazine

“Tyrone Noonan’s album Palimpsest offers an entirely excellent repertoire of contemporary jazz sounds and textures. In particular, a jazz brush is waved over Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” with delicious effect. Noonan’s vocals are fabulous/easily comparable with Vince Jones; rich, golden, funky and full of emotion.” Sound Bites Review, The Northern Star
