Sun1Jul6:00 pm- 8:30 pmTicketedSUNDAY SPECIAL: MFG (GERMANY/AUS): MAAS/FARRELL/GORALSKI

Event Details

MFG is the musical collaboration of guitarist Nico Maas, saxophonist Gemma Farrell, and pianist Thomas Goralski. The name MFG acts as an abbreviation for their surnames, as well as the German greeting, Mit freundlichen GrĂĽĂźen (with friendly greetings).

The three musicians, originally from Germany (Maas and Goralski) and Australia (Farrell), met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2010 where they studied their Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. Here they collaborated together on many projects, including the Gemma Farrell Group, the Monday Quartet, and Say What?!

In June 2013, they each graduated from CvA and knew this would mean that they would soon part ways. They were however determined that this would not mean the end of their work together.

It was on the way back to the train station after a gig in Haarlem, a few days before Farrell flew home to Australia, that they formed the idea for MFG. A band that would see Maas, Farrell and Goralski as the composers, touring and collaborating with local musicians (on double bass and drums) and recording a new album every two years.

Their debut album “Live at the Brisbane Jazz Club” was recorded as part of their Australian tour in 2014. The composition “Requiem” from this album, was nominated for 2015 WAM Song of the Year in the Jazz Category. In 2016 they toured Switzerland (where Goralski now resides) and Germany, and recorded their second album, “People, Places, Lizards.” Most recently, the composition “Tony Umbridge,” from this album, was nominated for 2017 WAM Song of the Year in the Jazz Category.

Please join MFG for their first Brisbane performance since their live, debut recording in 2014. This show will take place shortly before recording their third album. For this tour and album, and all future collaborations, the band have decided to focus on funk jazz.

MFG will be joined by Kane Shaw on Bass and Ryan Daunt on Drums.
