Greg is a bassist, singer, composer, producer, arranger/musical director and educator.  He grew up in Melbourne Australia, studied piano and guitar and played in bands in the thriving 1960’s music scene while at high school and university.  The years 1969-1974 were spent working in Asia and Europe. Apprenticed to many fine older musicians, he continued his studies in piano, bass, jazz and life.

In 1974 he moved back to Sydney Australia, where he quickly became one of the first-call session/studio bassists.  During this time, he helped form the award-winning jazz-fusion band Crossfire with Jim Kelly and Michael Kenny. The band recorded several acclaimed albums and toured nationally and internationally for many years.

Relocating to Byron Bay in 1984, he began a dual career in academia, helping to create Australia’s first contemporary music degree course at Southern Cross University in Lismore. For 20 years he was a full-time lecturer in music performance and theory.During his time in Byron Greg has continued to record, write and produce, as well as leading his own bands.

Greg maintains a busy musical life, performing with many bands, touring, writing, recording and producing.  Greg Lyon and the Hip Operation are one the funkiest bands in the land. Based on the simple concepts of fun music, great grooves and fine musicianship, the band combines elements of RnB, Soul, Funk and Jazz.  Their latest album Operation Groovin’ was released in February 2014.
